How an ESA & Alectra service upgrade works
Every job is scoped on site. Not every panelboard swap needs Alectra Utilities; service size or meter changes usually do. A typical path looks like this:
- Site assessment — we review the existing panel or service, load and access.
- Quote — written scope covering equipment, labour, permits and any expected utility coordination.
- ESA permit — we take out the permit for notifiable electrical work.
- Coordinate with Alectra Utilities — when the utility service or meter arrangement changes.
- Install — panelboard or service work, planned around your shutdown window.
- ESA inspection — arranged once the work is ready.
- Certificate of Acceptance — issued when the work passes inspection.

Do I need an ESA permit for a panel upgrade?
Yes for notifiable electrical work. As a licensed electrical contractor (ECRA/ESA #7016967), we take out the ESA permit and arrange the inspection. You receive the ESA Certificate of Acceptance once the work passes.
When is Alectra Utilities involved?
Alectra is typically involved when the utility service or meter arrangement changes — for example a service size upgrade. Not every panelboard swap inside the building requires Alectra; we will tell you if utility coordination is part of the scope.
How long does a commercial panel upgrade take?
It depends on the scope. Work is often scheduled over one or more days so we can plan shutdowns with your team. We confirm the timeline in the quote.
Can you upgrade a panel for EV charging capacity?
Yes. We assess available capacity and can upgrade the panel or service to support EV chargers. See our EV chargers for buildings page.
Do property managers get written reports?
Yes. You receive a written work report, and on permitted work the ESA Certificate of Acceptance, plus photos on request.
